Mauka Lani Elementary School

All teachers will:
Conference one minute with one student a day for two weeks.
After two weeks, start begin two conferences a day.

Goal - I want my students to be able to say, "I know this book is nonfiction because...."
We will look at these criteria to determine what nonfiction is
- The topic is clear and I can recognize it
- I see a photo on the cover/in the book
- I can find information about the topic in the text
- Carrie: Conference with students to determine what they know about "superstar" non-fiction books and adjust my curriculum accordingly
- Kathy: Increase my conference to 2 students daily.
- Kathy: Have students be able to identify and explain why a book is non-fiction.
-Colette: I will set a time daily to meet with students, one at a time, and ask them, "How do you know if a book is non-fiction? When they understand this concept I can have them go to the library and borrow a non-fiction book and show me evidence from the book that supports why the book is non-fiction.
Georgina- Conference with students more often and give them more opportunities to practice identifying non-fiction books.
*Jan 12 - adults share a NF and see if it contains these criterias
*Jan 31 - teachers try at least one whole group and one small group lesson about NF criteria
*Feb 2 - share out at GL artic time

Grade 1

Goal - I want to incorporate Book Boxes with in my classroom and use them so students can pick a variety of Good Fit Books.
We will look at time - dedicating a set time to choose/change/share/read texts
choice - students chose the text they place in their box
space - where will these boxes be stored
texts - using various texts i.e - reader's theater, poems, songs, recipes
resources - what will help me find texts
We will help students understand why having a book box is important and how it will help them become a better

*Jan 12 - discuss time, choice, space, resources
*Jan 21 - each student has a book box
*Jan 31 - students have selected different types of text to place into their book boxes

P-11: The children have their book boxes. They personalized them and self-selected fiction and non-fiction books. They can trade books once a day. I am trying to conference with individual students at least one time a week (not all students, but one time). We are currently undergoing very stressful school renovation. Please look at BOOK BOXES heading for the pictures.
Shay-The students have book boxes. I would like to conference daily with at least one student as a natural conversation that is not scripted about their book boxes. Also, give the students opportunities to share with each other about their books through trading and recommendations.
Lynda-The students have book boxes also on their desks. I would like to continue our goal of conferencing with at least one student using a book that the child will choose from their book box and ask open ended questions, "What are reading today? What do you notice about what you are reading?"
Raynette-Students will choose a book from their book box and I will conference with at least one child a day. I will ask open ended questions to help the flow of our individual conferences.
P-11 (Rose): April/May 2011--worked on nonfiction unit with Dana, then had students make their own nonfiction book on an animal of their own choice.

Grade 2

Goal - Dedicate 10 minutes a day to read aloud to students for enjoyment. I will find a set time that works for myself and for my students.
We will put the fun back into reading and reignite our own passion for literacy.
We will share books that we are passionate about with our students

*Jan 12 - teachers share one book they are passionate about with each other at artic
*Jan 26 - share what you notice with yourself and students as you are sharing each day in your class
*Feb 2 - Discuss how we can amp up this passion by incorporating different ideas

Grade 3

Goal - We will work on conferencing. We will begin to dedicate time twice a week to conferencing with students. Get students to be able to tell and understand the elements of the same kinds of story.
We will start with the theme/topic of friendship.
Katrina - Will do more read alouds for pleasure.
Marilyn - Examine text features of NF particularly in textbooks.
Jan 12 - discuss check in times and share times
March 9 - We will begin conferencing when we return from Spring Break. Make students and teachers comfortable in having
a conversation about their reading while gaining insight into student's comprehension.

Grade 4

Goal - try out conferencing. For the next two weeks devote one minute of conferencing with one student a day. After two weeks, try two students a day. Our ultimate goal is to conference with five students a day.
We will make this a habit and schedule it in at a set time everyday.
We will acknowledge our willingness to try and share.
We will focus on the act of collecting knowledge/data to gauge students' attitude and understanding.
We will share what we have discovered about myself and my class.
We will try to have an opening line, questions to ask, and an ending line
"How's it going" questions "Thanks for sharing."
We will remember that this is not a conversation. We need to listen, observe and watch our students.
We will not engage in teachable moments - we will listen, observe and watch our students.

*Jan 12 - we will discuss and set a time to check in with each other and share.
BEFORE APRIL - Try to conference with 3 kids a day for 1 minute each. Set the stage for practice time and use your knowledge of "general" questioning to guide your conferences.

We will continue to work on our January goals.

Grade 5

Goal - Try out conferencing as a conversation with one student a day for one minute during a set time.
We will try conference as a natural conversation.
We will not use conference as a specific tool to try to understand if a student understands a specific strategy.
We are willing to try and practice this.
By doing this, we are helping the student as well as myself reflect.
We need to get comfortable with time, schedule, and language of conferring.

*Jan 12 - meet to discuss the types of questions we will ask to keep our conferencing natural and open. Work on a check in time to share with each other.
